What CMD recipe do you make the most. Has it changed over time?
I was raised on DGCC,so it was probably my most made before CMD was published.
My husband loves the amazing german chocolate cake, and that is definitely my most repeated CMD recipe. I always add a bit of cocoa powder with the cake mix, and usually add either/or flaked coconut, chopped nuts, and mini chocolate chips.
My husband says the best cake in the world would be this cake baked into layers, and frosted with more pecan coconut frosting. Has anyone baked it in layers?
I thought it would be interesting to see if our favorites have changed over time.

Hubby and one son love the white chocolate lemon cake. I find myself making that a few times a year |

One of my favorites is the Snickerdoodle cake. My friends request it all the time. I have made it with the cinnamon buttercream, chocolate buttercream and the chocolate pan frosting and it's good with all of them!! I make the DGCC a lot too, I make it as a bundt and as cupcakes. I tried it as a layer cake once and it didn't turn out as good as it does in the bundt pan. _________________ When life gives you lemons, make grape juice. Dawna,
This is a hard one... Here's the thing... Personally, I love and have always loved the Almond Cream Cheese Pound Cake (see original Cake Mix Doctor) but based on the crowds I have baked for over the years I have made (and even won a baking contest with!) Mary K's Never Ending Chocolate Cake, sort of a DGCC on steriods, quite a bit. _________________ ~T. Martin |

| Let's see...My favorite cakes are the Snickerdoodle Cake and the Tunnel of Fudge Cake. Erin's Not So Plain Vanilla cake is pretty good, too. That's a stand by, even though it comes from this board and not the books. |

| The Chocolate Pistachio cake is definitely the biggest hit of all the cakes I've made. But I like making the Fuzzy Navel cake more, because it's so easy, and because I love the taste! |

The banana cake with quick caramel icing is my go to cake for birthdays etc. Also pineapple upside down cake from the book is better than any I have made or tasted from scratch. I would like to make more of the chocolate cakes, have tried the Darned good Choc. and loved it, still have to try the tunnel of fudge. That will be my next cake.

Birdy,
Do you have any tips for preparing the quick caramel icing? I have always been interested in this cake and the two attempts I have made have ended in my serving the finished product to the "circular file" because of problems with the quick caramel icing setting up too quickly such that I damage the cake in the process of trying to put on the icing.
When I met Anne a few weeks back at her book signing in NY I asked her about this icing as it has really been the one CMD recipe that has bugged me since book one and she mentioned something about thinning out the icing so as to buy myself more time during the application process.
The picture of this cake has always appealed to me and I want to give it another try but my two disaster experiences make me hesitant. Any thoughts you (or anyone else on this board who has had success with this cake and/or icing) might have are greatly appreciated. _________________ ~T. Martin |

Alton,
Would you say the Fuzzy Navel Cake has a strong orange flavor? I am not familiar with the actual drink but have always wanted a stronger flavored citrus cake under my belt (the Blueberry Muffin Crumble Cake in the new book somewhat does the trick). The Fresh Orange Cake in the original CMD was often discussed in this board's early days and the lack of strong orange flavor was something that came up as a topic a couple of times as I recall... _________________ ~T. I'd forgotten about the Pineapple Upside Down Cake! That's a really good one, too. |

The Snickerdoodle cake is yummy, and I love the Honeybun cake. Makes my house smell soooo good!

The Banana Cake made in bundt form and substituting buttermilk for water, folding in cinnamon chips and sprinkling nuts in the pan and glazing with the Brown Sugar Caramel Glaze has been the most well received cake so far by family, friends and co-workers alike.
Also, another big favorite has been the Mini Chocolate Pistachio Bundt Cakes topped with the Shiny Chocolate Glaze.
But I must say the ones I go to the most are the easiest ones like the Pecan Chip Brownies, and the Chocolate Sheet Cake with sour cream and you can frost it a hundred different ways. _________________ Debbie |

No, I wouldn't say that. The peach schnapps in the cake definitely comes through more than the OJ. However, I omit the orange juice from the glaze, so that would lessen it a bit. I'm sure you could get away with using only a 1/2 cup of schnapps as opposed to 3/4, and making up the difference in orange juice. And I typically use bottled OJ, as I'm far too lazy to squeeze oranges. Using fresh orange juice would probably enhance the taste. And you could throw in a touch more orange extract, as well.
However, I do think the star of this cake was intended to be the peach schnapps. You might do better at exploring one of the other orange cakes in the box; sadly, I haven't tried any of those yet. |

I get countless requests for the Darn Good Chocolate Cake as it is always a hit at office birthday parties whether I make it as a sheet cake or in a bundt.
Also, the Chocolate Surprise Muffins have a cult following with a certain group of friends. I always put the shiny chocolate glaze on them to gild the lily a bit and the kids can't eat them fast enough. |
