The cake is a red velvet cake, baked in 8 inch square pans. It is frosted with cream cheese frosting, and decorated with chocolate or candy clay. This was my first experience with the clay, and I did like the way it looked, but it didn't hold its shape to make the bow I had envisioned. I think that if I had something to hold the shape while it set or dried, it would have worked, but I didn't have time for that.

The gingerbread cookies are some of the 300+ plus I made at Christmas for a cookie exchange and cookie trays. They are from an old recipe that was in an activity book my sister and I had as children. They decorated with royal icing and colored sugar. Everyone told me how good they were, and some people couldn't bear to eat them because of the decorations!

Hi Susan! :D

The cake is so pretty and the those gingerbread cookies so cute. Are they all gingerbread or part of them a sugar cookie? You really made a bunch of cut-out cookies complete with decorations for sure! I'll bet you did get a lot of oohs and ahhs, and people just looking at them not wanting to take a bite. :D Thank you so much for sharing these special things with the rest of us.

Susan,
Thanks so much for sharing the results of your hard work with us! The cake and cookies look beautiful. I'm impressed that you even attempted chocolate clay...I can finally get a cake to taste good, but I have to be super-creative to get it to look good! (Among my favorite decorating tools is fruit roll-ups! LOL) We never did get around to making gingerbread this year. When my girls see these pictures, I'm sure they will bring that to my attention yet again!
Diane

P.S. Yes, my foodie daughter has started looking at all the pictures on our forum, in preparation for her birthday in August! Oh my!

Thanks everybody!

Mary--the cookies are all gingerbread.

Diane--the chocolate clay was super easy--basically melted chocolate with corn syrup added. At first it looked really strange, but after it cooled off and I kneaded it, it looked and felt a lot like play doh. I rolled it out between wax paper and cut it with a knife and small cookie cutters. I actually have 1 recipe of gingerbread dough in the freezer, as I got tired after the 300th and something cookie. I think gingerbread would be fun for Valentine's Day. Also, a friend of mine has been decorating her cakes with cookies, or maybe they would make good birthday party favors?

Phyllis, I've played with play dough a few times, and this chocolate clay looks like fun. Thanks for the link.

I am new to this forum (although not the website). I have the first Cake Mix Doctor book - and LOVE it. I am trying to post an image of a cake I made for my husband's 40th.

The sushi pieces on the side are Hostess Hohos the ones in the middle are sliced twinkees that I wrapped in a dark fruit roll-up and put some gummy candy in the middle.
