Post subject: Orange Dreamsicle Layer Cake
PostPosted: Wed Oct 29, 2003 1:58 pm
Just received The Dinner Doctor as a gift and I am salivating over the Orange Dreamsicle Layer Cake recipe on page 465. However, I've been everywhere and I cannot find an orange cake mix. I know Duncan Hines makes an orange cake mix but it doesn't seem to be available in the St. Louis area.

Hopefully, someone can tell me how I can turn a white cake mix (or any other cake mix) into a suitable substitute so I can bake this luscious sounding recipe.

Thank you in advance.

Dear Guest - For your liquid, use 1 cup of orange juice, and add 2-3 tsp of orange zest. For more flavor, add 1/2 to 1 tsp orange extract.

Guest - I just read the recipe and with the orange jello in it, I don't think you'll have a problem with flavor! AFter reading the recipe, I'm anxious to try it. It's a lot different than the Orange Dreamsicle Cake in CMD1!

Do you live in the states, Guest? In wandering around the internet looking for something else, I stumbled across netgrocer.com and they have a full selection of DH cake mixes for sale. You could order your orange mix from there. But it looks like they only deliver to the US...

Hi Guest -
You made this cake? Did it taste like a 50/50 bar? Remember the orange popsicles that had vanilla ice cream inside?

We often mix vanilla ice cream with orange sherbet, and it is very delicious. Would it taste something like that?

Barbara--

Yes, I think this cake tastes like those dreamsicles (popsicles) and I'm anxious to hear what other folks think once they've had a chance to try it. It's just a wonderful cake....so light and tasty.

Mary--

Yes, it would taste exactly like that mixture of vanilla ice cream and orange sherbert. If you like that mixture, I'm sure you'll love this cake.

Hello Everyone: Guest that is a very good combination of the vanilla ice cream with the orange sherbet. I had a recipe for a pie with a chocolate crust and the you were supposed to use as the filling, the combo of the ice cream and sherbet. Well, I bought everything and didn't get it made right away, and so one night my DS and I just decided to try it without the pie shell. I didn't know until later that there is a company who makes that combo. Well, I will certainly be trying the, "Dreamsicle Layer Cake," because of what you have said. Thank you for the review, and enlightening us.

Out here in Washington state, only Albertson's carries the Duncan Hines cake mix in Orange. I have made this cake and it is worth hunting down the Orange cake mix.
