I have been making this ever since I got my DD book - so a couple of years for sure. I sometimes make it for dinner and my family requests it often for brunch. I have done it with bulk sausage and with sausage patties and it is great both ways. Once I used sausage from a Cracker Barrel restaurant, that has bacon and ham in it, and that was so spectacular that I was inspired to try subbing chopped ham or precooked bacon and they are both really good. I like a tart apple in it, such as granny smith, and a nice sharp cheddar. I have tried the southwestern variation Anne suggested and it was good but not as special as the apple version. I have also tried it with other breads and really like it with a nice multigrain or oatmeal bread.

P.S. If you are pushed for time in the morning, as I often am, I have put the thing together the night before, put it in the frig, and baked it in the morning (takes about an extra five minutes if it is cold) and it was just fine.

Thanks Kathy! Will give it a try, maybe next week. I appreciate your posting the review!

Just had to add this: there were 20 women at my meeting yesterday and FIFTEENasked for this recipe; the other five don't cook!

This recipe worked great for me, too, and as I recall I played pretty fast and loose with it, because I had a hodgepodge of ingredients to use up! Someone had given us a gift pack of sausages, and we are not big sausage fans but didn't want to waste them -- so I chopped them up and put them in this recipe. It was a great way to use them up, as well as some stale dinner rolls from the freezer!

Talk about doctoring, and using what's around to do it, now that's! the way to go! :D I love these ideas. We aren't big on sausage either, but for a nice change of pace, this would really make an easy and good breakfast dish when a person has guests or for a family.

This review intrigued me, so I made this for dinner the other night. It definitely was good.

I also made the smoked salmon spread from the DD for a group of friends last night. At first no one wanted to eat the strange, very pink spread I brought, but once I told them it contained smoked salmon they gobbled it right up. So easy and so good. I highly recommend it.
