All,

Not sure how many here are familiar with scrapple;
I heard of it for the first time when I moved to MD (guessing it is more of a southern food)but have never tasted this breakfast meat. Saw this tasty meatless alternative...

Scrapless Scrapple

I thought it was from Pennsylvania...I had it at home in Miami, Fl and my folks were from the New York area. They do carry it in Publix, but I don't get it often. I think I will get some this weekend since you reminded me of it.

I am not into the "meat" alternatives...sorry!

I grew up in Baltimore and we never had scrapple. I don't think they even sold it in the grocery stores. When I went to college, in the Maryland mountains, the dining hall served scrapple - we thought it was the used steel wool pads fromt he kitchen - awful stuff. But, I had a friend from the area and her Mom cooked great scrapple. I think it's more of a Pennsylvania thing, in fact my son has a friend who's Mom is from Pittsburg and they have scrapple at his house. But, it's home made.

My Grandmother lived outside Philadelphia and loved scrapple. She got my Mom, who was from Boston to like it. I grew up outside Boston and never cared for scrapple. Here is a link that tells about it: Scrapple

My Dad, who was a George, cooked it for us. Crispy and usually served with eggs. Another favorite he fixed was "fried mush". Yellow corn meal made and poured into a loaf pan to harden and cooked the next day. Fried and served with maple syrup. YUM!!

I used to make this when my kids were young and living at home. It was a cheap meal addition that was filling. I have never had scrapple but I believe that if you live in an area influenced by the Pennsylvania Dutch, Amish or Mennonite, you will have at least have heard about scrapple since that is a dish that they often make to use up leftovers. Without refrigeration this makes a lot of sense.

As a native of the Baltimore area, I grew up with scrapple and it was and still is sold in the grocery stores here. The primary brand is Rapa made in Delaware. It's definitely a Pennsylvania Dutch influence food. I too grew up with hit fried crispy and served with eggs--I still love it especially if I can get it at a dutch market or from dutch country. I think it's Bridgeville, DE that holds an apple scrapple festival each fall.

Here in Florida, Publix Markets sell it in the frozen meat case. I enjoy it but since it's just me, I don't buy it that often!
