Hamburger Cake

 Testify! 9/12/2006

Congratulations to Stacey, known as SmjVA on the Community Board, on her first novelty cake...and an impressive one at that!

Stacey said she wanted to make a hamburger cake for her husband's birthday in July since he loves to grill, and would probably grill hamburgers every weekend if she let him. I think we all know someone like that.

So, she found a picture of a hamburger cake on the Betty Crocker web site and began scouring the Cake Mix Doctor books for the right frostings.

"This was my first novelty cake and I was a bit nervous - I wanted it to look good and taste good."

Stacey decided on the Fluffy Chocolate Frosting and Coffee Buttercream Frosting from Chocolate from the Cake Mix Doctor. She decided to use a basic yellow cake mix so there wouldn't be too many flavors involved.

"I made the cake the morning of his birthday and made him stay upstairs while I made it. To assemble, I cut one of the 8-inch cakes in half and used that for the bun. The other whole cake was used for the burger. I put the bottom of the cut cake on the cake plate and frosted top and sides with the coffee BC. I then put the whole 8-inch cake on top and frosted top and sides with the chocolate BC.

She used tube icing from the grocery store for the lettuce, ketchup and mustard, and used white sprinkles for the sesame seeds.

"When I finally called him down to see it three hours later, he said it was worth the wait and was amazed by it. We had family over to celebrate and everyone loved the way the hamburger cake looked. The bigger test was how it tasted. I've only started making homemade frosting this year with the help of the Cake Mix Doctor."

Everyone on the Community Board was impressed as well. But, Stacey's right, the biggest concern with good-looking cakes is whether the taste has been sacrificed for beauty.

"The frostings were perfect. The colors were just what I wanted to get the look of the 'bun' and 'hamburger' and the flavors worked great together. Not to mention chocolate and coffee are also two of my husband's favorites. My husband loved it and I was happy I could surprise him with a fun cake that tasted delicious!"
